Lleyton Hewitt(b. 1952-)
(US) Wimbledon winner 2002
Won 2002 (bt.David Nalbandian 6-1, 6-3, 6-2)
The year -2002- Wimbledon had the greatest number of seeds knocked out in the early rounds.
Hewitt is the only mens singles Champions to go out in the 1st round(2003) !
The fiery little (by modern standards) Hewitt showed that he could still compete with the "Big boys", despite his baseline game and limited physical power.
What he lacked in physical prowess was certainly made up for by his grit and determination. Hewitt, played a baseline game with amazing powers of retrieval, and a "you just can't beat me attitude". A master of the overhead lob, he often embarrassed his serve and volley opponents who rushed him at the net, and then saw the ball go sailing over their heads, landing just inside the baseline. Unfortunately for Hewitt he went out in the 1st round the next year, 2003, to the lanky, hugely serving Croation, Ivo Karlovic, ranked 203rd in the world - the first time a mens champion has gone out in the 1st round at Wimbledon. A record Hewitt would rather not be known for !
The gritty Aussie has recently had a resurgence of form and shown us why, even now, he is still a player who can compete with the modern top players.
The score before the score ! Despite its old-fashioned image and tradition, Wimbledon has always moved with technology. Since the introduction of the IBM Slamtracker, computer users can get the up to date score for the current match on their devices - before the score has actually been announced on court by the referee !
