John Newcombe was the last man to win the Wimbledon tournament when it still had an amateur status, in 1967. The big Aussie had a heavy serve/volley style ideally suited to the Wimbledon grasscourts, and won the championship for the first time in 1970 as a professianal, beating fellow Aussie Ken Rosewall.
The next year, 1971, he beat the giant American, Stan Smith, in another five set match. Nicknamed the "Newk", Newcombe was one of only two players(the other was Rod Laver) to win Wimbledon as an amateur and as a professional.

Never heard of the The Clegg Soil Impact Hammer ? This is an important measuring instrument used by the groundstaff at Wimbledon to test the health, hardness and dampness of the court surface, thus insuring that the turf is always in pristine condition for ball bounce, and still regarded as the best kept grass in the sporting world.
These days Newcombe runs his tranining ranch in Texas for young aspiring tennis players who hope one day to hold the Wimbledon trophy - just like he did.
