The only Wimbledon champion to be denied membership after his outbursts.
The most famous rant in the history of Wimbledon- "You cannot be serious !".
Played in the famous long 5 set final against Bjorn Borg in 1980, regarded as one of the greatest mens finals of all time.
The nastiest "bad boy" of Wimbledon.
The only Wimbledon outburst to generate a BBC tv programme.
The fiery American was one of the best natural serve-volley players the world of tennis has ever seen, and played Bjorn borg in one of the greatest mens finals of all time in 1980, but is remembered more for his oncourt outbursts
than his winning shots. Ironically, it was McEnroe's temper, his "Jekyll and Hyde" tantrics, that endeared him to a large,
portion of the crowd, and some say that brought a change of attitude which helped to break down
the "stuffy" attitude of the old traditional Wimbledon.
"Mac" now works for various television networks like the BBC, doing commentary and analysis.
He also plays in numerous old Champions' matches, like the Statoil Masters at the Royal Albert Hall - still showing his fiery, competitive, and argumentative nature! Surprisingly, McEnroe was born in Germany, not the United States.
That's just not British ! McEnroe's classic rant with the referee, 1981, at Wimbledon, versus Tom Gullikson - "You cannot be serious... you're the absolute pits of the world !".
