Always the argumentative renegade, controversial, left-hander Connors fought with the crowd, the umpires and his opponents, often using rude gestures, and winning the Championship twice, playing with the new(at the time) Wilson T2000 steel racket. 
Connor's steel racket was a revelation, though was often critisized by some traditionalists, who still preferred the old wooden frame. At 5 foot 9 inches tall, and 155 pounds- a lightweight by modern standards -
Connors made up for lack of physical prowess by his sheer grit and determination. He is now regarded as the real pioneer of modern tennis racket technology.
