The first Wimbledon final to be played on the 3rd Monday of the Championships turned out to be one of the greatest in modern times when the unpredictable Croatian, Goran Ivanisevic, beat the classic serve-volleyer, Pat Rafter, in a final that was played on the third Monday, amidst a noisy Centre Court crowd.
Ivanisevic surprised many critics by winning the Mens title even though he was only seeded a very low 125th, and most critics say this was due to his brilliant accurate serving. The fact that Ivanisevic was only ranked a very low 125th made the achievement even more surprising.
