Arthur Ashe (b. 1943-1993)
(Us)
Won 1975 (bt.Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1,5-7, 6-4)
The first black player to win the mens singles Championship.
The oldest player to win the mens singles Championship, at 31.

Arthur Ashe created Wimbledon history in 1975. Ashe was the first black male (Althea Gibson had won the Womens title in the late 1950s) player to win the Wimbled Mens singles title. At a time when race and colour were sensitive, and dividing in sport, Ashe, together with Yanack Noah, is one of only two black men in tennis history to win a Grand Slam - which is still a record to this day. Despite his athletic frame and superb fitness,
he was plagued with bad health, and suffered with heart disease. Sadly, after surgery in the early 1980s, he contracted the HIV virus due to a bad blood transfusion, and died prematurely in 1993 - a truly sad loss to the world of tennis.
A Brit in the 4th round of the mens, in 1975 ? Amazing, but true ! Ashe beat an English player, Graham Stilwell (below), now forgotten, in the 4th round.
